HEALTH INSURANCE FOR SENIORS
Medicare is a federal insurance program for people
age 65 and older and certain disabled people. It is run by the Health Care
Financing Administration (HCFFA), which is part of the United States Department
of Health and Human services. Medicare is the nation's largest health insurance
program and covers 39 million Americans.
As valuable as Medicare is, it has its limitations. Not "ALL" medical charges are paid for by Medicare. It covers all or part of many medical expenses - both hospital and doctor fees - but you are still held responsible for deductible and coinsurance payments. Plus, if your doctor does not accept Medicare assignment, your medical costs could exceed Medicare's approved charges and you would be required to pay the difference out of your pocket.
There are ten standard Medicare supplemental
insurance plans designed to supplement or bridge the gaps in Medicare coverage.
They offer more freedom to choose the hospitals and doctor of your choice
than with an HMO, however you pay a fixed monthly premium. These Medicare
Supplement plans vary in what they cover and how much they cost, with the
most comprehensive coverage bearing the higher costs. |
